7 Unexpected Signs that your Night Routine Needs an Upgrade

Are you accidentally sabotaging your sleep? Don’t let your daily habits and routines ruin a restful night of sleep!

I’ve been there. I once went through a period of insomnia that majorly impacted my life. But thankfully I overcame the issue and I know you can too.

Psst…Before we get started I have a signature program, Restful Sleep the Natural Way that I think you will love. You will discover the foundations of a holistic lifestyle and why that is essential for great sleep. You’ll see why this is the ultimate strategy for getting to the root cause and aligning yourself for sleep.

7 signs you are ready for a sleep upgrade:

  1. You replay the latest installment of office or household drama in your mind until you make yourself crazy.

Sleep, yeah right! Not gonna happen. Something like this can throw you off from getting sleep for days. What you think in your mind and your ability to control your thoughts are a major component of being able to sleep well. This is a key, yet often overlooked fact and something I am super passionate about.

When you can’t sleep, one simple thing you can do is keep a note pad by your bed and write out everything bothering you. Just getting it out of your head will cause a big shift and start to calm your mind.

Or you can try this Gratitude Workbook for a great way to put you in a feel good state and get rid of those negative feelings.

  2. That dinner you ate, (or snacks or even lunch) isn’t sitting right and you can’t figure out how to get to sleep. Or maybe you don’t even realize what you ate is keeping you awake!

Surprisingly what you eat during the day affects your sleep that night. You don’t need to go on a strict diet. (I know, I don’t like that either) But having the knowledge of what foods are best to eat and even what food actually induce sleep are so important.

A high quality tea after dinner not only helps with digestion, but some herbs like chamomile, lemon balm and lavender are natural sleep remedies. Yogi makes a great variety pack to sample what you like best.

  3. The medications you take are inadvertently keeping you awake

About to skip this section because this can’t possibly pertain to you? You would be surprised that even natural supplements can keep you awake. Or maybe you have not made the connection yet between your prescription meds and its side effects.

  4. Your sympathetic nervous system has kicked on when your partner started snoring.

Sound familiar? It does to me. This is a major issue for myself and many others. First your spouse should be checked for sleep apnea by their doctor. But you also need to learn how to control your fight or flight response that kicks on. To get started, try taking a few slow, deep breaths until you feel yourself calm down.

  5. You watch TV or play on your phone before bed, then can’t get to sleep until late.

But isn’t watching TV or playing games on my phone supposed to make me drowsy? Not the case, in fact the opposite is true. But there are tons of relaxing things you can do before bed that will get you into a state ready for sleep. It’s easy really. Start by listening to some relaxation music while you get ready for bed. This will start the winding down process.

  6. You didn’t drink enough water during the day but don't want to drink any now because you will go to the bathroom all night.

Dehydration itself can keep you awake. You may not even realize you are dehydrated. This can be compounded if you drink alcohol and not enough water along side it.

Or you run to the bathroom more than a few times before and during the night.

Some drinks are actually diuretics. Such as coffee and other caffeinated drinks. Coffee stays in your system way longer than you think and can actually be causing you issues you didn’t

realize. This is just one of the reasons you may be having this issue!

  7. You’re falling asleep at 7pm, but can't go to sleep at bedtime! Or wake up at 3am and can’t go back to sleep until your alarm goes off!

I’ve been there! This is so frustrating. If you wake up and can’t go back to sleep there are so many issues that can be to blame such as racing thoughts or maybe even blood sugar issues. The best approach is going to be balancing the systems of your body through a holistic approach.

Once I started using holistic strategies and simple changes to my routines, sleep became so easy. It was no longer a struggle. I became less irritable, and my anxiety and fatigue diminished. I can now understand why I am not sleeping and immediately get back to sleep.
