Going to sleep and staying asleep can be difficult for so many. I’ve been there and found that yoga was one of things that really did the trick, helping me to fall asleep more easily. This practice clears your mind and releases all of your body’s built up tensions to help you drift off to sleep. I’m sharing with you 3 ways yoga can help you get a great night of sleep.

We’ll be covering:

  • How sleep deprivation can wreck your health

  • Morning outdoor yoga

  • Yoga Nidra, or yogic sleep

  • Benefits of yoga in the evening

If you’re tired of struggling to fall asleep, if you are tired of being exhausted during the day, and constantly feeling like you can’t get everything done that you need to, then you’re in the right place.

Psst…Before we get started I have a Restful Sleep digital program that I think you will love. You’ll discover the foundations of a holistic lifestyle and why that is essential for great sleep. You’ll see why this is the ultimate strategy for getting to the root cause and aligning yourself for sleep.

Let’s get started!

How Sleep Deprivation Can Wreck Your Health

Getting enough sleep is essential for the healthy function of your body. The nervous system is most drastically affected when you don’t get enough sleep and can cause changes in memory and behavior. Not getting enough sleep can affect your decision making, ability to control emotions, and increase depression and anxiety.

Additionally sleep deprivation can alter your immune system's ability to fight off infection and it can increase systemic inflammation.

All of these reasons are enough to make some adjustments and get back to sleep ASAP.

Morning Outdoor Yoga

Getting outside in the morning sun helps set your circadian rhythm. Your circadian rhythm is an internal clock that rises and falls in a cycle throughout the day. It tells your body when it’s time to fall asleep and when it’s time to wake up. If this gets off course, your sleep patterns can be off.  If you can get outside in the morning, this will allow your body to balance your circadian rhythm.

And let me tell you, there is nothing like outdoor yoga and I highly suggest it. You can even grab your yoga mat and head to your backyard for a quick session.

Additionally, practicing yoga in the morning sets your day up on a positive note helping you tap into your personal power and move through your day grounded and with ease. You get to set your intention for the day and increase your energy levels at the correct time.

Yoga Nidra, or Yogic Sleep

Yoga Nidra, or yogic sleep, is a form of meditation that you can do anytime of day including before going to bed. This systemic meditation takes you through the five layers of self, leaving you with a sense of wholeness and relaxation. Anyone can practice yoga nidra, as it is as simple as lying down or sitting in a comfortable position while you listen to a guided meditation. It promotes deep rest and relaxation that can calm the nervous system and prepare you for a good night’s rest.

Benefits of Yoga in the Evening

Practicing yoga in the evening helps prepare your mind for sleep and relax before bed. It allows your mind to rid the clutter of the day and unwind. If you are stressed out or need to calm down before bed, Pranayama or Hatha Yoga for winding down will have you practicing deeply relaxing poses. Your whole body will relax, your nervous system will calm down and your physical tension will melt away.

Once I learned how yoga can help me get that rest I was craving and implemented it into my daily routine, I was so grateful. My anxiety has been reduced and I don’t get upset as easily with my family. With these yoga practices, I feel better than ever.
